due to the transfer of electrons: Charging by friction When two insulating materials are rubbed together, electrons are transferred from one material to the other. This process is called charging by friction. Charged objects The material that loses electrons becomes positively charged, while the material that gains electrons becomes negatively charged. For example, when a glass rod is rubbed with silk, the glass rod becomes positively charged and the silk becomes negatively charged. Charged objects interacting Charged objects can interact with each other. For example, if a charged balloon is touched to a neutral balloon, some of the electrons from the charged balloon are transferred to the neutral balloon. Both balloons will then have a negative charge and will repel each other.
